Microsoft put a lot of emphasis on the “X” branding for the original Xbox console, which was named after the Microsoft DirectX technology on which it was based. The entire console is built around the letter, with a massive lime green logo in the center displaying the console’s name. Despite its stylized appearance, the console had a very functional overall design, with four controller ports on the front, an internal power supply, and, of course, a built-in ethernet port for Microsoft’s vital Xbox Live online gaming service.

Microsoft did not release a slim version of its original Xbox console, as it did in later generations. However, soon after its release, Microsoft replaced the original console’s hulking “Duke” controller with the much more compact “Controller S,” which had originally been the standard controller for the console’s Japanese release. Despite its awkward size, the Duke has a devoted following, so much so that accessory manufacturer Hyperkin would later resurrect the design as an Xbox One controller.

The XBOX 360

The Xbox 360 appeared to be a very different console than the original Xbox. It was now available in white as standard, and the giant “X” shape was replaced with minimal Xbox branding along with the disk tray.

The console was a huge success for Microsoft, and it arguably allowed it to compete with Sony’s PlayStation for the first time, but the original machine was plagued by problems, with an estimated quarter of consoles experiencing some kind of hardware failure. The “Red Ring of Death,” so named because of the three red lights that would flash on the front of the console if there was a problem, was the most common.

Microsoft would later announce an extended warranty to address the issues, and numerous home-brew fixes for the issues would emerge online over the years, with sellers offering tools and replacement thermal paste to assist users in resolving the issues themselves.

Memory unit slots on the front of the console and an easily removable (albeit proprietary) hard drive on select models are also notable hardware features of the original Xbox 360. Oh, and there were the swappable faceplates, which Microsoft intended for users to use to customize the appearance of their machines. The only problem with the faceplates was that no one bought them. Most people, it turns out, were content with the original console’s white color scheme.

XBOX 360 S

The Xbox 360 S offered two significant advantages over the original Xbox 360, or three if the slimmer dimensions are included. The first was that it included a dedicated port for Microsoft’s new Kinect peripheral, allowing you to use the new motion-tracking accessory without having to power it separately from the wall. Second, it was a hardware redesign that Microsoft hoped would put the 360’s hardware failures to rest.

Minor changes included the introduction of the glossy black color scheme, which Microsoft would use well into the Xbox One generation, replacing the white colouring that had dominated the Xbox 360 lineup until then. It also had built-in Wi-Fi and more USB ports, and it did away with the

In June 2013, Microsoft released the final model of the Xbox 360 E, just months before the release of the next-generation Xbox One. The 360 E didn’t bring many new features, but it did have a new design that was in line with the upcoming next-generation console. Microsoft also stated that it would be quieter and cooler to use than previous 360 consoles.

THE XBOX ONE

Microsoft hoped that the Xbox One would serve as a central hub for all of your entertainment, rather than just games. At launch, it included a number of video streaming services, as well as the ability to route your cable box through the console to watch live TV while playing games. Early models included a new version of the company’s Kinect camera.

However, buggy functionality, as well as a dated VCR-style console design, limited the original hardware’s appeal. The Xbox One never delivered on Microsoft’s promise of a home entertainment revolution, and in the years following its initial release, Microsoft shifted away from these initiatives as it attempted to reposition the Xbox One as a gaming-first machine and close the $100 price gap with the competition.

 XBOX ONE S

In 2019, Microsoft would release a more affordable disc-less model.

XBOX ONE X

The Xbox One X, originally codenamed “Project Scorpio,” was intended to bring 4K / HDR gaming to Microsoft’s Xbox One without introducing a new generation of Xbox consoles. Despite packing far more graphical horsepower than either the original Xbox One or the Xbox One S, the Xbox One X remains remarkably compact, with a sharp rectangular design similar to the One S.

With the benefit of hindsight, it’s worth noting that Microsoft’s initial promises that the console would be capable of VR never materialized. But it was difficult to care given the console’s performance improvements over the original Xbox One, which even extended to some backward compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games.

XBOX SERIES S

While it wasn’t the first time Microsoft offered two console tiers in a single generation (such as the Xbox 360’s “Core” edition, which came without a hard drive and had a wired controller), the Series S and Series X represent the most significantly different consoles Microsoft has ever released at the same time. The Series X appears to be the future, whereas the Series S appears to be an evolution of the Xbox One S.

The Series S is smaller than the Series X, targets 1440p rather than 4K resolutions, and can only play digital versions of games due to its lack of a disc drive. However, Microsoft believes that more budget-conscious gamers will be unconcerned because the console costs nearly half the price of the more premium Xbox Series X.

THE XBOX SERIES X

Because of its wide, upright design, the Series X has been frequently compared to a refrigerator, but Microsoft doesn’t seem to mind. It’s even embraced it in a playful way, with fully functional Xbox-themed fridges.

While its design is unlike anything else released by Microsoft, the Series X clearly draws inspiration from the Xbox One X’s clean lines and dark color scheme.
