History of HP
In 1935, Bill Hewlett and David Packard graduated from Stanford University with degrees in electrical engineering. During a fellowship they had with the previous professor Frederick Terman at Stanford during the Great Depression, who they regarded a mentor in founding the firm, the corporation began in a garage in Palo Alto. With their initial financial investment of US$538, equal to $9,891 in 2020, Packard and Hewlett began part-time employment in a leased garage in 1938. Hewlett-Packard decided to formalize its cooperation in 1939. To decide whether Hewlett-Packard would be the name of the firm they created, they threw a coin. On August 18, 1947, HP was founded, and on November 6, 1957, it became public.
The HP 200A precision audio oscillator, which used a small incandescent light bulb known as a “pilot light” as a temperature-dependent resistor in a critical portion of the circuit and a negative feedback loop to stabilize the amplitude of the output sinusoidal waveform, was Hewlett and Packard’s first financially successful product. When rivals were selling less reliable oscillators for over $200, the HP 200A was able to sell for $89.40. The 200 series of generators were produced until at least 1972 as the 200AB, which was still tube-based but had better design over time.
Although HP is regarded as the symbolic foundation of Silicon Valley, it did not begin actively researching semiconductor devices until a few years after the “traitorous eight” abandoned William Shockley in 1957 to start Fairchild Semiconductor. HP Associates, a subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard founded in 1960, produced semiconductor devices primarily for internal use. Another former Bell Labs researcher, MOSFET inventor Mohamed Atalla, who served as Director of Semiconductor Research, co-founded HP Associates. HP Associates’ semiconductor devices were used in a variety of goods, including instruments and calculators.
In the 1980s, HP expanded into South Africa. HP has been accused of “automating apartheid” by activists who urge divestment from South Africa.
In 1985, sales totaled $6.5 billion, with 85,000 people.
HP extended its computer product line in the 1990s, first targeting university, research, and business customers, to include consumers. HP expanded through acquisitions as well: in 1989, it purchased Apollo Computer, and in 1995, it purchased Convex Computer.
HP stated on September 3, 2001, that it has signed a deal with Compaq to merge the two firms. HP and Compaq formally merged in May 2002, after a shareholder vote. Before this, plans to merge the firms’ product teams and product lines were in the works.
HP provides support for the old Tandem NonStop series and Digital Equipment products PDP-11, VAX, and AlphaServer, as Compaq acquired Tandem Computers in 1997 and Digital Equipment Corporation in 1998.
After a proxy battle with Bill Hewlett’s son Walter, who opposed the transaction, the merger was completed. HP grew to be a prominent manufacturer of desktop computers, laptops, and servers for a variety of markets. Following the merger with Compaq, the new ticker symbol was changed to “HPQ,” a combination of the two prior symbols, “HWP” and “CPQ,” to reflect the importance of the partnership as well as significant letters from the two firms, Hewlett-Packard and Compaq (the latter company being famous for its “Q” logo on all of its products)
Palm, Inc. and HP announced on April 28, 2010, that the latter will purchase the former for $1.2 billion in cash and debt. The addition of Palm handsets to HP’s product line caused some overlap with the iPAQ series of mobile devices, but it was anticipated to considerably increase HP’s mobile presence since iPAQ devices had been underperforming. Purchasing Palm, Inc. gives HP access to a collection of important patents as well as the WebOS mobile operating system.
