Samsung Galaxy Watch 3’s favorite bezel—a revolving bow on a wonderfully packed, $399 smartwatch—is just as satisfying as it seems.
Although fidget-swiveling is fine, life-saving health features like an FDA-approved ECG sensor and trip detection are better. Tack on SpO2 and VO2 Max readings, a large library of watch faces, and slimmed down styles, and Samsung found the winner with its next-generation wearable.
There’s no doubt that this is the finest Android smartwatch (and best Samsung Galaxy 21 Ultra accessory) you can buy right now, but this Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 review describes how this new contestant matches up against the best smartwatches, as well as the category champion Apple Watch Series 6.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: Design
The bezel is back, man. When we checked the mechanism during our original Samsung Galaxy Watch analysis, we found the physical bezel useful and enjoyable. Spinning the dial performed perfectly on both side buttons and provided a better alternative to swiping or attempting to prod with our finger on the circular display.
The bezel is keeping up for a second time, but it looks much better because Samsung was slimming down the Galaxy Watch 3. It’s 8 percent bigger, 14 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter than the first Galaxy Watch. We’re talking millimeters here, but the disparity is obvious when it comes to what you’re wearing on your wrist. Still, the 1.7-ounce, 41mm Mystic Bronze model I’ve checked looks chunky compared to my Apple Watch 5. The trade-off is that it looks more like a typical watch than a high-tech watch. Although I could ditch my Apple Watch for a fun dinner or a date night, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 has its stylish accessories.
Best still, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 comes with authentic leather bands that complement the color of the case and lead to higher aesthetics compared to the fitness-focused Samsung Galaxy Watch 2. But the leather doesn’t go well against sweat or water, so I’d change it for sportier ones if I kept using the Galaxy Watch 3 as my regular driver.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 display and watch faces
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 3’s 360 x 360-pixel screen is sharp, bright enough to be noticeable in direct sunlight, and always-on, but that’s not what caught my attention. I’m going to confess the Apple Watch issues are worrying me. I feel compelled to use a mix of five different faces at once to see all I could like in the day, and even then I wish there were more choices. Join the Galaxy Watch 3 with 80,000 different watch faces and 40 complexities to select from.
It took me some time to work out the mix of design and data that gave me the warmth of the Galaxy Watch 3, but I’m a sucker for the weather-centric backgrounds. I can’t understand why I’m never testing the weather until I leave the building, because if having rain animations on my wrist doesn’t help, nothing will.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 performance
Samsung’s Tizen platform is still trailing behind Apple’s watchOS, but there’s a major change from Google’s Wear OS. Not only are the Galaxy Watch 3’s numerous menus extremely flexible and filled with helpful applications, but the launch and flipping between them still feel sharp. Thanks to the bezel, navigation is intuitive, and I used it along with the dual buttons to get where I needed to go. Motion movements, on the other hand, didn’t do that for me. When I was able to get them to work, I felt a little stupid in the process.
What didn’t sound dumb is the Galaxy Watch 3 T9 keyboard that I used to test more frequently than I imagined I would. I know, texting on such a small screen sounds stupid, but I loved the opportunity to send texts when I couldn’t use talking to email. I wish that the Apple Watch will replace Scribble with an updated miniature keyboard. Even, no matter where you are, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Trip Warning Sensors will contact emergency services on your behalf anytime you feel you’ve got a heavy and unexpected crash. Apple Watch has had this feature for a couple of years, so it’s nice to see Samsung catch up.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 ECG readings and monitoring of blood pressure
The Galaxy Watch 3 has an FDA-approved ECG sensor, which ensures that the current smartwatch will be able to spot atrial fibrillation symptoms much like the Apple Watch.
Although the Apple Watch FDA-licensed ECG sensor is old news (it debuted with the Apple Watch Series 4), Samsung has been slow to have its version approved, gaining the first technology approval on the Galaxy Watch Active 2 in South Korea. Both these smartwatches will also handle ECG readings.
Samsung has received approval for a blood pressure device in South Korea. For now, the sensor will remain inactive in The Galaxy Watch 3 until it has been approved by the FDA. If it gets a green light earlier, it will be the first smartwatch from a big-name tech brand with a functioning blood pressure control device.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 sleep tracking
In bed, the Galaxy Watch 3 benefits from Samsung’s collaboration with the National Sleep Institute to provide consumers with insight into their REM period, plus a morning update on sleep efficiency and advice on how to improve sleep.
On the nights I wore it to bed, I checked the sleep monitoring of the Apple Watch at the same time. Apple’s native sleep monitoring software rewarded me with a little more sleep and realized when I woke up in the middle of the night during monstrous thunderstorms, while Samsung replied with more actionable info.
Any of these observations are provided by the SpO2 sensor or pulse oximeter of the Galaxy Watch 3. The SpO2 sensor will record respiratory irregularities while sleeping, which is a prevalent symptom of sleep apnea. I don’t have a lot of trouble sleeping for one, but anyone who does might learn how to take steps to improve their sleep cycle with Watch 3.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 apps and storage
Tizen OS has a more small library of third-party options than the native Apple Watch App Store, but there are enough big programs like Uber and Spotify at your disposal. And with Galaxy Watch 3’s 8GB of audio room, you can save tunes for offline black play with a Spotify Premium subscription. I’m not using an LTE model, but I’m looking forward to making a couple of my playlists available when I leave my phone at home for a bike ride. I enjoy this aspect of my Apple Watch 5, which has a greater storage space of 16GB. I’ve only filled up almost half of my Galaxy Watch 3 storage with a couple of my favorite playlists, though, so I’m going to have to be careful of the audio I don’t need anymore to use.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 fitness and health features
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 3 can track 40 total activities, and seven can be tracked automatically, meaning you won’t always have to choose what kind of exercise you’re doing beforehand. I wanted this because my spooky 85-pound black lab didn’t want to wait for me to start a walking tour of our neighborhood. The Galaxy Watch 3 onboard GPS measured my daily course precisely enough (it’s about 1.2 miles, depending on how many times the dog wants to go in circles).
I had the same experience when I took the bike and running watch, the latter of which was told by the VO2 Max readings on request. I’m far from being an endurance runner so I didn’t give any warnings, but I imagine more dedicated athletes would appreciate this feature during training. They might not appreciate the leather straps, though.
I know I didn’t do that. It seemed odd to get them wet with sweat, and I didn’t even consider taking Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 near the pool despite its 5ATM water resistance rating. If you’re planning on using the Galaxy Watch 3 for anything more than light exercise or looking at one of the best fitness trackers instead, I’d recommend getting silicone bands.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: Features
40 cumulative events can be tracked by the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, and seven can automatically be tracked. My regular path was calculated precisely enough by the on-board GPS. When it detects you have taken a hard and abrupt drop, the watch’s trip warning sensors will contact emergency services on your behalf. But the leather straps feel weird having them soaked with sweat, and considering its 5ATM water resistance ranking, I didn’t even suggest taking the watch near a lake.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 3 has an ECG display that is FDA-approved. Much like the Apple Watch, the sensor can detect signs of atrial fibrillation. In South Korea, Samsung has also received approval for its blood pressure sensor. It is anticipated that the FDA will shortly approve the sensor. It will be the first smartwatch with a functioning blood pressure control device from a big-name technology brand.
In bed, Samsung’s collaboration with the National Sleep Institute supports the Galaxy Watch 3. The native sleep monitoring software from Apple rewarded me with sleeping a little more. With more actionable details, Samsung replied. A SpO2 monitor, which is a typical symptom of sleep apnea, may report breathing disturbances while sleeping. The Watch 3 has a pulse oximeter that is built-in.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Charging & battery life
Battery life is where the current Galaxy Watch appears to slip behind the previous one. The Galaxy Watch 3’s 340 mAh battery is optimized for 2 days, versus the 4-day endurance of the initial Galaxy Watch. That’s fair to the expectations of the smartwatch (the Apple Watch 5 only gets 18 hours) and presumably leads to the slimmed-down style.
The Galaxy Watch 3 lives up to the battery predictions of Samsung. The watch lasted about 2 days, along with hour-long workouts and sleep monitoring in the first two days that I wear it. When I activated the always-on monitor mode, however, the battery life fell in its second cycle to 24 hours. That’s much better than my Apple Watch 6, though.
The Galaxy Watch 3 can be charged with its proprietary charge when it requires more juice or with a compatible Samsung phone through wireless power-sharing. For the sake of having my bedside table organized, I tried this charging cradle dock from Amazon, too.

In a competitive market for wearables, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 stands out. There are many trendy smartwatches and fantastic fitness trackers to choose from these days, and Samsung has succeeded in finding a balance between the two. It introduced the Galaxy Watch Active 2’s best fitness features to a bezel style that rivals savant Fossil timepiece offerings.
The Galaxy Watch 3 is more pricey than the Galaxy Watches and Wear OS Fossil options before it, and leans more towards lifestyle than health, but this integration has come at an expense. I can’t say I’d substitute an Android one for my Apple Watch at the same price. But you will not find something more polished and strong than the Galaxy Watch 3 if you have picked up an Android phone, especially ones made by Samsung, and want an extension of it on your wrist everywhere you go. Or something with a rotating function that is at least as rewarding.
